If you’re a writer, you know the frustration of hitting a place where you just can’t write. The dreaded Writer’s Block gets to all of us writers from time to time. Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines it as “a psychological inhibition preventing a writer from proceeding with a piece.” Writers know that this includes not even being able to come up with an idea for a piece. So, how do you deal when you’ve hit a writer’s block? I’ve got three tips to help pull you out of that space and into the flow of words and ideas.
Tip #1: Keep a Notebook and/or Virtual Note Pad with Ideas as You Get Them
I used to carry a little notebook around with me in my giant purse for years, until I switched out my big purse for a small crossbody and my notebook for the notes app on my phone. I still carry a big purse sometimes, but my notes app has pretty much replaced that small notebook. I realized I get lots of ideas while I’m out walking or driving, so it’s very convenient. I can type my ideas, poems and thoughts into pages on the app, or I can dictate them when driving. When I’m experiencing writer’s block, I use these notes for ideas.
Tip #2: Read!
Another tip to combat writer’s block is to read. Do lots of reading, especially on topics you are struggling to find words for. You will get inspired, you’ll learn and you’ll hopefully walk away with some ideas that you, hadn’t…and couldn’t think of.
Tip #3: Go Out and Get Inspired
Ask yourself if you need some inspiration and if you do, go out and get inspired! Being a writer can be a one woman show, and although I love to think and create with words, having a community to get inspired by is a valuable thing. I recently joined the See Jane Write Collective, and I love it. We are currently doing a challenge called Blog Like Crazy (writing a blog a day during November, this is one of them) and I enjoy reading a few other blogs each day. They inspire me and help me create connections with the women in the group by interacting about their work. Getting inspired for me also means talking to friends, family and strangers. They will usually have something going on in their lives that is worthy of your written expression, so get in people’s business, lol. I love going to concerts, museums and other events like poetry readings (before the pandemic). I always walk away feeling inspired and armed with some gems for my writing.
