How to Make Creamy Unforgettable Mac & Cheese (Auntie Approved)

I come from Southern roots, North Carolina to be specific, and for as long as I can remember we gather together on holidays and enjoy each other’s company as well as delicious Southern cuisine. Don’t ask me about the origins of mac and cheese, because I don’t know. I just know that it’s now a Soul Food staple and whomever makes it, better not mess it up. Why? Because, it will ruin the holiday dinner and you do not want to be responsible for throwing off the holiday plate.

It’s in the top three dishes for Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas for my family (and many others), so when I first decided to venture into learning how to make this delectable dish, mine was a backup. One has to earn her respect as the go-to purveyor of the holiday mac and cheese. I’m about ten years in and have rightfully earned the aforementioned moniker due to my sister’s amazing recipe and lots of trial and error throughout the years.

My sister is an amazing cook, especially when it comes to soul food, cakes and pies. I love food, but was always more of a great restaurant and carry-out type of girl than your go-to cook. About ten years ago, I started to get into cooking. I had the desire to be really great at a few dishes and macaroni and cheese was one of those goals. My sister makes some of the best mac and cheese in the family and she was more than happy to walk me through preparing it. In the past few years, she added cream cheese to the recipe and once she put me on to it, I’ve been making it that way ever since. It adds to the creaminess.
