Insecure Season 4 Finale Recap "Lowkey Lost"

Whew! I have to start there, because this episode still has me on the edge of my seat trying to predict how all of these conflicts/real-life shit will play out for our beloved (some a little hated) Insecure characters.

#TeamIssaandLawrence?

The episode opens with Lawrence and Issa continuing to add to their new honest and vulnerable foundation. He tells her he got the job in San Francisco and he wants to move there. It’s a great opportunity and he wants to know if their relationship can continue. Issa tells him she’s at a point in her life where she wants to cut out the BS and be with people who make her happy. He makes her happy. She will go with him and build a life with him there. Yeeeessss!

She then meets Nathan at the barbershop to see the space in the back he’s going to transform into his own shop, that would be perfect for her next event. They talk. She is honest about getting back together with Lawrence and wants to be friends. He’s cool with it. Once again, Issa is stepping into awkward situations, armed with honesty that solidifies her bonds.

We can Put our Beef Aside to Help Our Mutual Friend

They just kept the twists and turns going in this finale. Molly and Andrew were at her house having a conversation about how they usually do things on her schedule and his displeasure with that, when she gets multiple calls from Kelli, who tells her Tiffany is missing. Issa, Molly and Kelli meet up with Tiffany’s husband Derek, and he tells them she has been missing for a day. They can’t get help from the police, so Issa and Molly put their beef aside, and help find their homegirl. Derek knew she was dealing with post-partum depression but didn’t realize it was this bad. When they find her at hotel and he calls out to her, she answers from behind the room door sounding forlorn and defeated, she opens the door and just keeps saying she’s sorry. Derek opens his arms and embraces her, seemingly enveloping all of her pain into his being. Her girls stand a few feet away with tears in their eyes.

“Molly, you literally never let shit go.”

We all saw this coming, and I wondered what took Andrew so long to break things off with Molly, but he was trying with her. I think he really cared for her, but she couldn’t get out of her own way. He gave her lots of grace, advice, and love, yet she couldn’t breakthrough and see that she was draining him by not reciprocating the same consideration and grace.

When he says “Molly, you literally never let shit go.” As she pleads her case for their relationship to continue, like the astute lawyer she is, she knows it’s over. She knows she messed up and he’s done. When he tells her he doesn’t think it should be “this hard,” he’s right. It’s clear to him they are not fighting for the same thing. Molly is fighting to be right. Andrew was fighting to be in relationship (see what I did there, her therapist asked her that in the previous episode). I think this breakup is the catalyst she needs for a breakthrough.

These are My Confessions

This confession broke my heart: Condola is pregnant. I knew it! She must have been scared to tell Lawrence or unsure and wanted to tell him in person, but she is and she made it clear that she is keeping the baby. She also tells him he can decide if he wants to be in the child’s life or not. You see their faces in the picture above? Yeah, that’s how my face looked when watching this unfold: shocked, pained, numb. Like all the air got sucked out of the new life they brought to this new version of their relationship. He tells Issa he didn’t plan it and did not want it to happen. She tells him it’s too much. In a later scene, she sits out on her balcony, joint in hand, contemplating and escaping it all. Feeling so much inside for Lawrence, but totally not in control of…what she can’t control.

Should she stay or should she go? I need them to watch The Game as they think about if they want to move forward or not. Look, if Melanie and Derwin could make it, I’m just saying…

The episode ends with Issa sitting at a table in an Ethiopian restaurant, the one she and Molly love, saying “I’m glad you called.” The camera then pans to Molly, who replies “I’m glad you came.”

This was refreshing. They need each other, and I don’t care if it’s because they are both heartbroken, it’s a start.

Moral of the story, in my opinion

This adulting shit is overrated! Lol. Really, it’s hard, and heartbreaking. It can be beautiful and bountiful while also breaking you. It’s life. Our Insecure friends in our heads are growing up and dealing with grown up things. One thing I know for sure, well maybe two: we need each other to soak up the joyous times and buoy each other in the rough times, and growth, though painful, is a beautiful thing. Once you get to the other side of it, you get to where you need to be.
